I was recommended this fix on the teamyoutube Twitter and it worked for me. If you're on a mobile device, turn off bluetooth. Once you've turned your bluetooth setting off, close the video you have playing and reopen it or open a new one and the ads should be gone and background playback should be working again. After this hour can re-enable bluetooth and it functions as is.Edit: appears this is only a temporary fix for it and you'll have to cycle the bluetooth setting to get it to work for a few more videos. via /r/youtube
